Debbie Smart, Debendale Collies, who was featured on the site a few short weeks ago (see below), passed away on February 18, 2011. This photograph was taken by Debbie's close friend Peggy Faith, who brought one of her Australian Shepherd puppies, born on Debbie's birthday, to visit her. What a lovely illustration of one life, while coming to an end, welcoming a new life into the world.

Debbie Smart, Debendale Collies, was honored by Carroll Kennel Club last week for her many years of service to the club. She is pictured with judge Col. Jerry H. Weiss USMC (Ret.), presenting the Best In Show award to bearded collie, CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins handled by Cliff Steele. Debbie joked prior to the presentation that if she didn't like the judge's choice, she would give the trophy to someone else!

The most well-known of the Debendale collies was the CH Tartanside The Gladiator, ROM son "Derby", CH Debendale's Trademark, who finished in four weekends, with four majors, from the puppy class. Although Debbie had shown primarily in the breed ring with her collies and shelties, she later discovered the agility ring, and enjoyed competing with her Min Pin.
Carroll Kennel Club paid tribute to Debbie with a lovely display of her photos and AKC certificates, and a large cake was enjoyed by the attendees. Among the collie fanciers in attendance to celebrate were Pete Denbow, Joyce Spirat, and Jim Frederiksen, who was judging on the day. We were all happy to join in the celebration of Debbie's dedication to the club and her dogs!
