Ring Patterns: A look back at January 2016

Mason-Dixon Collie Club leads with best turnout
There were 17 specialty shows held in five states during January: Texas, Oklahoma, Maryland, Ohio and Virginia. Carrie Chase, whose original breed is Pembroke Welsh Corgis, judged the largest talent pool, surveying 77 collies -- 49 roughs and 28 smooths -- at the Saturday afternoon show hosted by Mason-Dixon Collie Club in Maryland on January 16. Judge Chase was approved for the breed in November of 2010.

Collies excelling in the Herding Group
A total of 16 judges awarded 17 Herding Group placements, including three Group 1 awards. The rough variety came away with a ribbon 13 times compared to 4 for the smooth variety. Charles Olvis gave out multiple placements and he was one of three judges, along with Neena Van Kamp and Patricia Trotter, to honor the breed with Group 1 awards. Judge Olvis' original breed is Old English Sheepdogs and he has been approved for Collies since 1996. The Group 1 he awarded represents the month's largest number of herding dogs shown -- 253 -- at a show in which a collie placed -- Nolan River Kennel Club in Texas. In this case, the honor went to the smooth variety.
