Greater Brighton Collie Club leads March with best turnout
There were 21 specialty shows (not including the National Specialty) held in 6 states during March: Arizona, California, Maine, Michigan, New York and Wisconsin. Mary Benjamin judged the largest talent pool, surveying 59 collies -- 40 roughs and 19 smooths -- at the Sunday morning show hosted by Greater Brighton Collie Club in Michigan on March 6. Judge Benjamin was approved for Collies on August 1, 1984.

Northern Wisconin Colle Club draw the largest entries
Northern Wisconsin Collie Club held three specialty shows in two days on March 12 and 13 in Menasha. The average entry per day was 62 under judges Leah Ryan, Lorraine Still and Ed Degner. These shows were held 10 days prior to the National Specialty. Judge Ryan, who hails from Australia, tallied the largest entry for the month with a total of 67 at the March 13 show.

Collies excelling in the Herding Group
A total of 10 judges awarded 10 Herding Group placements, including two Group 1 awards in the month of March. The rough variety came away with a ribbon 8 times compared to 2 for the smooth variety. Sulie Greendale-Paveza and Beverly Capstick honored the breed with those Group 1 awards. Their original breeds were Shetland Sheepdog and German Shepherds, respectively. The largest herding group in March had a total entry of 403 for Butch Schulman, where the smooth collie was awarded a Group 4. This show was held the weekend preceding the National Specialty in Louisville, Kentucky on March 20.

Owner handler takes "Best" at Monticello New York Kennel Club
Herding Group judges placed collies 6 times in the AKC National Owner-Handled Series, including multiple Group 1s by judges Cathy Daugherty and Joy Brewster. and Best Owner-Handled in Show by Judge Dorothy Taylor and Reserve Best under Elaine Lessig -- all to the smooth variety at Monticello New York Kennel in mid March.
