Ring Patterns: A look back at October 2016

South Jersey Collie Club leads the way in October

There were 13 specialty shows held in five states during October: California, Colorado, Kentucky, Nebraska and New Jersey. Joan Kirkland came away with the largest entry judged, surveying 59 collies -- 37 roughs and 22 smooths, at the Saturday afternoon independent specialty show in Buena, New Jersey on October 22, 2016. Judge Kirkland was approved for the breed in June of 2005. Of the 13 specialty shows this month, 2 were designated specialties -- the Saturday morning South Jersey specialty hosted by Gloucester County Kennel Club and the Collie Club of Colorado show held on October 28, hosted by Continental Divide Herding Association. The largest entry of roughs came under judge Kirkland with 37 and the largest entry of smooths were exhibited under Sandra Wrenn at Collie Club of Kentucky with 24, which incidentally, was the same number of roughs exhibited.

Both Varieties hold their own in the Herding Group
This month recorded 1 Best in Show (judge Susan Brown), 3 Reserve Best in Show awards (judges: Alan Ewles, Mary Anne Brocious, Houston Clark) 49 Herding Group placements, including 12 Group 1 awards, 15 Group 2 awards, 9 Group 3 awards and 13 Group 4 awards. It was split down the middle on which variety came away with the most placements -- 24 for the roughs and 25 for the smooths. Three judges placed both varieties in the same Group: Jim Frederiksen at Ramapo Kennel Club in New Jersey, Ken Buxton at Platte Valley KC in Nebraska and Lynne Harwood at Wenatchee KC in Washington.

The largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie took a group placement was 194 on October 1. It was a Group 1 under John Wade at Elmira Kennel Club in upstate New York. The honor went to the Rough variety.
