The San Diego Collie Collie held its Fall Specialty and Collie Rescue Raffle on November 8th, meshing together with great camaraderie conformation exhibitors and 21 adopters of rescue collies from Southland Collie Rescue. The collective effort of these two dedicated groups of collie lovers totaled nearly $1,900 in donated funds for SCR, of which a check for $1,000 was generously donated by Mr. Glen Twiford of Wind-Call Collies. For those who may not recognize Nina, she is the last of the great Oklahoma Collie ladies, which included her best friends Florence Cummings, Ada Shirley, Vi Taylor, and Bess Phillips. Nina was the breeder of Ch. Arrowhill Oklahoma Tornado who was Winners Dog at the 1966 CCA National Specialty in Columbus, Ohio. Nina still lives at home with her corgi, "Flower."

In memory of Sandy Draper
Collie Health Foundation President Nancy McDonald issued a statement yesterday on the passing of Sandy Draper:

It is with great sadness that I share with you the news of Sandy Draper's passing. I have no
details of arrangements, if any, have been made.

Sandy was the Foundation's greatest cheerleader. He was the first president in 1986 when
the Collie Health Foundation was originally chartered. After the successful launch of the
Collie Health Foundation, Sandy was asked by the AKC to help them charter the AKC Canine
Health Foundation, which he also did with great success.

Sandy was also mastermind and host behind the original "Gathering Of The Great," which has
now moved and evolved into the event we know as "Sunnybank in the Summer." Many still
affectionately call it "The Gathering."

Sandy will be greatly missed — his ideas and imagination were great contributors to the
Foundation being where it is now. An appropriate memorial needs to be created to honor
Sandy — please share your ideas!

Seminar presented by Myra Savant Harris
The Collie Club of America Connecticut District in conjunction with Tri County Collie Breeders Association sponsored a seminar on Canine
Reproduction, Whelping and Puppy Intensive Care presented by Myra Savant Harris, on July 19th and 20th in Bristol, Conn.

The seminar which was organized by CCA Connecticut District Director Jackie Caruso
and District member Mary Lange was a huge success with all available reservations filled.

The seminar presented by Myra Harris provides practical and invaluable information on breeding, whelping and saving puppies. Many breeds were
represented at this seminar; the questions and discussions were thought provoking and everyone walked away with information that they can use in their breeding practices. The response to the seminar was enthusiastic and a
good time was had by all.

Our thanks to all the district and club members who helped with the seminar, the registration tables and raffles.

All proceeds from this seminar will be distributed to Collie Rescue groups.

Tuff Quest Scholarship -- Juniors Helping Juniors
by Jackie Caruso -- TCCBA
The Tuff Quest for Juniors was presented with a $125 donation which came about through the combined efforts of Tri County Collie Breeders and one of our own Junior Handlers, Kia Pirro. The idea was born on the trip home from the national when the need for funds for the Tuff Quest scholarship program was discussed. Tri County made the offer to supply candy and Kia volunteered to get donations in return for a candy bar. Kia, being a very enterprising salesperson, depleted her supply of candy bars within 10 minutes at the shows, sometimes alone, sometimes with the help of other juniors. The exhibitors enjoyed the candy and the juniors felt they were part of the process of helping to fund the scholarship program. We hope that this will be an inspiration for other Collie Clubs and Juniors to try similar fundraisers at the dog shows for the Tuff Quest Scholarship Program.

Collie Health Foundation
Dr. Gregory Acland, Professor of Medical Genetics at Cornell University, made a blockbuster announcement last week concerning the gene and mutation causing PRA in Collies.

In an announcement dated April 24 to CHF grants chair, Steve Johns, Dr. Acland said, " As I have discussed with you, our laboratory has at last identified the gene and mutation causing PRA in Collies, and now have a DNA test that is working reliably in our laboratory to distinguish affecteds, carriers and genetically clear dogs. This test should become available to Collie owners and breeders in the immediate future."

In a statement yesterday regarding the announcement, CHF President Nancy McDonald said, "This is a spectacular breakthrough and is only realized as a result of the dedication and commitment of Collie breeders and Collie Health Foundation supporters over the last 20 years. We began funding PRA research in 1988 and since then, contributed $194,766 toward this goal.

"Further announcements will be forthcoming as soon as we know the availability to breeders of the PRA DNA test."

In Memorial: Alice Mulder
Edenrock's Mary Sadler has sent word of the passing of her and Adria Weiner's sister, Alice Mulder --

For those of you that knew our sister, Alice (Krug)
Mulder, Adria and I want to let you know that she went home to be with our Lord on Friday, February 15th at 2:30 PM, after a long illness. For all of you who are in the collie world, Alice was the one who got us all started with the dog business. When Adria and my brother Ted were youngsters, she carted them to the dog shows and started them in Junior Showmanship, She is best known for her Champion Sandystone Cobalt Commander, who was the only Blue Merle collie rough dog whom Steve Fields, of Parader Collies, put up during his judging career. And now you know the rest of the story.

We want to thank you all for your prayers and your
support. Without them we would not have made it
through the last few months. Listed below is the info for Alice's services. Again, we appreciate your love and concern.

Saturday Feb. 23----A MEMORIAL SERVICE---
5 P.M. TO 6:30 P.M. The Memorial Service and the dinner will be held at:

570 E. HIGHLAND (on the corner of E. Highland and Waterman), SAN BERNARDINO, CA.
TEL: (909) 882-2943

ADVERTISE ON COL

Breeders Directory Listing
There are two ways to advertise on Collies Online. Breeders can advertise their kennel by purchasing a Breeders Directory Listing for $75 and updating their litter news throughout the year. The listings are organized by state and have proven very affective for breeders all over the country.

Display Advertising including preferred position
The second way to advertise is by purchasing display ad space in our advertising tunnel. The lead ad in the tunnel is by reservation only and costs $100. The second, third and fourth position are also preferred positions and cost $75. Ads in the fifth position and beyond cost $50.

Pay with PayPal, check or credit card
We accept payments by check, payable to "Collies Online" or online through PayPal. If you want to pay with your credit card you don't need a PayPal account but you can still use the PayPal application.

Publishing schedule and advertising copy
Display ads are published on Saturday and appear in the ad tunnel for a week, on the contents page for a month and then in the ad archive for a year.

By sending us a photo and ad copy either via e-mail or snail mail, we can design an attractive ad for you or you can submit your ad finished.

Contact us by e-mail at ColliesOnline@fastmail.us for lead-page availability or specs if you are designing your own ad.

Each extra photo is $10 and you can enhance your ad with a pedigree for an additional $10.
