News: Collie Health Foundation partners with Morris Animal Foundation
Morris Animal Foundation announced on Monday its new partnership with the Collie Health Foundation to address significant health issues in the breed. Both foundations hope to identify preventions and treatments for health issues such as bloat, seizures, autoimmune skin disorders and lymphoma. The CHF is particularly interested in finding treatments and preventives for bloat. The groups will provide funding for up to two years in duration and up to $50,000 per year. MAF is the world’s largest nonprofit foundation dedicated to funding research studies to protect, treat and cure animals.

“We are delighted to expand the outreach of the Collie Health Foundation via Morris Animal Foundation’s vast network of research resources,” said Nancy McDonald, president of the Collie Health Foundation. “We eagerly anticipate the variety of opportunities forthcoming to improve the health of our collies and all canines.”

"This very generous gift from the Collie Health Foundation will allow Morris Animal Foundation to fund up to two studies targeting health issues for collies," said Wayne A. Jensen, DVM, PhD, MBA, chief scientific officer for Morris Animal Foundation. “These studies will provide information on mechanisms to improve the health and well-being of collies specifically, and other dog breeds as well.”

The online application process for researchers is currently open. Submissions are due by Friday, February 12, 2010, 11:59 p.m. EST.

Chesapeake CC Workshop “Make Yours The One"
by Chenoa Braucher, Takoda Collies
On October 3, 2009 in Powhatan, Virginia, Collie owners and breeders came together for Chesapeake Collie Club’s inaugural “Make Yours The One Workshop” presented by Joyce Dowling of Shenstone Collies, Rose Soellner of Wayside Collies and Nancy McDonald of Barksdale Collies.
The morning presentation began with Joyce and Rose providing an in-depth understanding of Shenstone and Wayside Collies and how they evolved into who they are today. Their presentation focused heavily on collie expression.
After a southern style lunch provided by Chesapeake Collie Club members, Nancy enriched the attendees with an interactive demonstration. Pulling volunteers from the crowd, she encouraged and educated them on how to make the connection with their dogs in the ring.
The educational day came to a close with a fun match. With over 35 dogs entered, the match judge, Shelley Roos of Wickmere Collies, chose a beautiful sable rough puppy dog bred by Joan Johnson of Blu Ridge Collies as Best in Match.

In Memory of Maeleine Loos
by Ellen Russell, Dublin Hill Collies

Maeleine Loos, of Bedminster, NJ, passed away on September 30. She and her husband Ron, who predeceased her by several years, owned and trained "Jodi," OTCH Waltstone Impulse, a daughter of CH Wickmere Chimney Sweep, and she became the first UDT Collie in the country to earn the OTCH title when it was introduced by AKC. Jodi, whom they affectionately called "the black brat" was, as Maeleine often said, the love of their lives, although they rescued and trained several other Collies, along with two German Shepherds, and earned countless titles with them all. Following the death of her husband, Maeleine, then in her mid-seventies, developed a new interest, and began herding with Deep River's Image in Ice HSAd, "Isis," who had come from Kathy Moll. Having decided that she didn't care to wind up hurt by a sheep, she and Isis pursued duck titles, and Maleine delighted in telling everyone how she learned to "shuffle" when she walked, so she wouldn't step on the ducks and injure them!!

Never one to blow her own horn, wonderfully willing to help others with obedience questions, and always thrilled to see another Collie owner in the obedience ring, Maeleine was a true "friend of the Collie," and she will be missed.

American Kennel Club News

Move over America's Next Top Model and Project Runway, the breed has its own cover model in Peg and Jim Vohr's rough collie, CH Mariner Fireworks. The sable dog appears on the American Kennel Club's brochure, "Why register your purebred dog with the AKC?" The AKC is a registry that promotes the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. Founded in 1884, the AKC and it's affiliated organizations advocate for the purebred dog as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being, protecting the rights of all dog owners and promoting responsible dog ownership.

In other news, Joe Esch of Signet Collies is the recipient of the $10,000 President's Award, a 2009 Scholarship for Veterinary Medicine sponsored by Royal Canin. Joe attends Ohio State University in Columbus. The AKC awarded 25 scholarships totaling $141,000 for 2009. Recipients were nominated by their veterinary school and subsequently selected based on academic achievement, purebred dog activities or related research, and financial need.

If you were at the National Specialty in Springfield, Mass., last spring, then you know Michigan's Bernie Howard of Stargazer Collies and "The voice of the CCA," was the 2009 recipient of the 2009 AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship award. Use the link below to see our featurette.

Performance Week -- Overcoming The Obstacles!
Collies Online celebrates its third annual Performance Week with spectacular images of dedicated owners and their talented working collies. Our theme this year is Overcoming the Obstacles. We understand that competing in performance events can take years of dedication and anything worth doing will eventually present its challenges. We specifically wanted to know how to keep pushing forward even though there may be a set back or two. You will meet "Camille" through the writing of Linda Rorem. Camille is one of the Montana Collies that certainly overcame because of the dedicated and caring people that rescued and cared for her. In this issue you will find out what performance event changed her life. We also share with you an excellent article by Joan Scialdone who instructs us on how to make Agility equipment in an easy and affordable way. Lastly, In our interview section we asked the question: In pursuit of a recent goal or title, what was an obstacle that you overcame? We asked for the specifics. We hope you enjoy this special edition of Collies Online. We are honored to be able to share with you so many exciting visuals, brags and the thoughtful commentary of so many talented owners about their special collies. Thank you to all who participated.

In Memorial -- Christie Reimer

Christie Reimer of Pueblo Colorado passed away January 21, 2009. She was a long time CCA member and truly loved the collie breed and was a great mentor to so many collie owners. Christie was active in the Southern Colorado Kennel Club, helped with obedience classes for many, many years. She was involved with the 4-H dog program and was a gifted writer. Christie was passionate about her breed, the Collie, and worked tirelessly to help anyone who needed it. She was always a student of the breed and yet had an unwaivering vision of the ideal collie. All that knew her will greatly miss her colorful presence at the shows and the long conversations about the collies.

In Memory of Donna L. Rothenberger By Lori Montero
The family of Donna L. Rothenberger has planned a celebration of Donna's life to be held on Friday, January 30, 2009 at 7:00 pm, with family visitation to follow. The service will be held at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 2205 South Church Street, Burlington, NC  27215 (contact: 336-228-8366). Dona Williams' husband, George Williams, will officiate.

A compilation of photos are being gathered by Kelly Martin in order to prepare a PowerPoint presentation to honor Donna, her Collies, and the farm we all came to know and love as Findley Vue.  If you have photos you would like to share, please email them to Kelly at kmvideos@msn.com.  Photos must be received by 4:00 pm Thursday, January 29, 2009 and should be in a medium resolution format.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the following organizations.  All were important to Donna, her Collies, and Chunk (her beloved Great Pyr who watches over her sheep) and are a testament to Donna's graciousness and unending support:

News about Collie people

Tom Coen received special recognition in the Winter 2008 edition of the AKC Newsletter for Conformation Judges for his contributions in developing most of the material for a presentation template designed to improve educational institutes and seminars. This “Template” was sent to all Judges Education Chairs, and provided as a guideline or as a suggestion to help presenters develop their seminars, in an effort to provide a more uniform presentation and hands-on experience for attendees. Using the Template, combined with the PowerPoint presentations of the Parent Clubs, will help to result in a highly informed learning experience for all attendees.

In the January 2009 edition of the AKC Gazette Susan Abraham (Breed) of Sanborn, New York, and Matt and Anita Stelter (Breed and Juniors) of Tomahawk, Wisconsin are listed as a provisional judges and may accept assignments. Jennie Duhon of Yorkville, Illinois has completed her provisional assignments and is now also approved to judge Juniors. ADVERTISE ON COL

Breeders Directory Listing
There are two ways to advertise on Collies Online. Breeders can advertise their kennel by purchasing a Breeders Directory Listing for $75 and updating their litter news throughout the year. The listings are organized by state and have proven very affective for breeders all over the country.

Display Advertising including preferred position
The second way to advertise is by purchasing display ad space in our advertising tunnel. The lead ad in the tunnel is by reservation only and costs $100. The second, third and fourth position are also preferred positions and cost $75. Ads in the fifth position and beyond cost $50.

Pay with PayPal, check or credit card
We accept payments by check, payable to "Collies Online" or online through PayPal. If you want to pay with your credit card you don't need a PayPal account but you can still use the PayPal application.

Publishing schedule and advertising copy
Display ads are published on Saturday and appear in the ad tunnel for a week, on the contents page for a month and then in the ad archive for a year.

By sending us a photo and ad copy either via e-mail or snail mail, we can design an attractive ad for you or you can submit your ad finished.

Contact us by e-mail at ColliesOnline@fastmail.us for lead-page availability or specs if you are designing your own ad.

Each extra photo is $10 and you can enhance your ad with a pedigree for an additional $10.
