In memory of Marcia Keller, Marnus Collies
Marcia Keller of Marnus Collies passed away yesterday on September 16, 2010. The Keller family has decided to have a private service at this time. For all of her collie friends they are planning to present a chronicle of Marcia's life at the 2011 CCA in Tulsa, allowing all of her friends to stop by and share their experiences with her through the years. Ron Keller and daughter Carrie Lenhart plan to continue on with the Marnus line using the representative stock she has left behind and all that she has taught them through the years.

New All-Breed Breeder Sweepstakes
A new competition acknowledging the efforts of the breeder began this year at the all-breed show in four locations across the country. It is called the Eukanuba Breeder's Stakes and it similiar to the notion of judging the stud dog or brood bitch get at the National Specialty but at an all-breed setting. The events for the "Stakes" this year were held at designated AKC All-Breed shows in Portland, Oregon, Houston, Texas, Canfield, Ohio and this weekend in, North Branch, New Jersey at Tuxedo Park Kennel Club. The competition usually begins about an hour after Best in Show judging and the details on the event are as follows; dogs must be at least six months of age, breeder must enter three dogs from at least two different litters, all three dogs need to have breeder listed as breeder of record, the competition begins at the group level which means all of the breeds of a group will be judged together and the breeder of record must be the first handler of the trio. The intent is to have judges select the best breeding program, not the individual dogs. Following in the tradition of sweepstakes competitions, cash prizes are awarded to the first four placements in each group.

Features: Performance Week 2010 -- Pawsatively A Passion!
It's performance week on COL! We share with you a "Diary on Carting" from Anne Lively of Gloaming Wood Collies in Maine and the latest on the developments of a CCA Carting program from Marilyn Clayton of British Columbia. We also have a tracking article called "What's the A-Track-tion" from Suzannne Schwab of Washington. Read our interviews on attaining the MACH (Masters Agility Championship), The OTCH (Obedience Trial Championship) and the HC (Herding Champion). These titles are the "PhDs" of their venues. We had to look far and wide but we finally found the owner of an OTCH Collie in Hawaii. Christine Oneoye explains how she attained the rare and coveted OTCH a few years ago with her Collie. From Hawaii to New Hampshire and Massachusetts, we also have an interview with Melanie Collins of Ryder Collies, who shares her unique journey on the way to the MACH and Christine Carilli covers her adventures attaining the HC on not one, but two of her Collies -- a father/son team. And lastly, don't miss any of the talented Collies featured in the ads for this week. This is "Pawsatively A Passion" for all.

Collie Health Foundation News
The Collie Health Foundation is proud to announce the approval of an exciting new two-year grant at Clemson University for $119,978. Lead researcher, Dr. Leigh Ann Clark previously worked on CHF's DM project at Texas A & M University, and is credited with the identification of the merle gene. The project is titled, "Collie whole-genome sequence and genome-wide association studies" and its goals are to assemble full-genome, high-resolution sequence data using pooled DNA from genetically diverse Collies.

Completely sequencing the Collie genome will allow for the identification of DNA sequence variations and other polymorphisms that make the breed unique. Increased knowledge of genetic markers informative in the Collie will provide a vital resource to expedite future research in the breed. Moreover, the inclusion of both dermatomyositis-affected and -clear Collies in the sequence analysis will facilitate an extensive investigation of candidate genes for this disorder. To identify genomic regions implicated in dermatomyositis, the proposal is to use the Affymetrix canine array to carry out a genome-wide association study. All data (e.g., sequence, genetic marker, etc.) generated in these studies will be deposited into a database created for the Collie Health Foundation.

The Foundation will be helping to coordinate subjects for inclusion in the first stages of this project. If you have a Collie that has been diagnosed with dermatomyositis, please contact grants chair Dr. Nancy Kelso for instructions to have your Collie contribute its DNA to this project. Her e-mail is collievet@msn.com.

In addition, CHF President, Nancy McDonald said that she is delighted to announce the unanimous election of the following 10 new Corporators: Ginny White, Mary Hunter, Jeanne Marre, Nancy Van Note, Laurie Jeff Greer, Dr. Babbi Dilbeck, Karen Anderson, Dr. Susan Floyd, Suzy DeLorenzo, and Tom Hoadley.

"CHF Corporators are expected to provide service to the Collie and the Foundation at an elevated level," said McDonald, "and we welcome these generous volunteers for volunteering their talent and skills to make our Collies' lives richer."
