Ring Patterns: A look back at December 2016

Florida specialties shine in December
December had four specialty shows (two designated specialties) held in three states: Florida, New Jersey and Ohio. There was a tie for the highest entry of collies judged at the Tampa Bay specialties in the middle of the month with 47 for both Nancy Anstruther and Susan Bertrand. Both judges were approved for the breed on January 3, 2017.

No holiday for Collies in the Group for December
This month recorded 18 Herding Group placements, including four Group 1 awards for three smooths and one rough under judges Paula Hartinger, Louise Palarik, Eric Liebes and Raymond Filburn, Jr. Rounding out the placements were three Group 2 awards, six Group 3 awards and five Group 4 awards -- 13 for the roughs and 5 for the smooths. Bill Shelton (Pembroke Welsh Corgis) was the only judge to place both varieties in the same group. That show was Delaware Water Gap Kennel Club in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It was the last all-breed show of the year in which a collie placed in the group and it included 133 herding dogs shown on the day.

We cannot find the exact number for herding dogs shown at the AKC Championship but we can tell you that the largest number of herding dogs shown at a show on the same circuit in Orlando a few days prior had 475 herding dogs exhibited. This was largest entry of herding dogs shown all year where a collie placed -- a Group 3 for the rough collie under June Penta (Afghan Hounds) at Brevard Kennel Club. At the prestigious AKC Championship dog show in Orlando on December 17 a few days later, the Smooth Variety took a Group 4 under Barbara Dempsey Alderman whose initial breed is also the Afghan Hound.
