Ring Patterns: A look back at July 2016

Roughs continue to dominate the Herding Group in July

This month there were 26 Herding Group placements awarded to Collies and a Reserve Best in Show awarded in Alaska by Barbara O'Neill (Borzois) at Kenai Kennel Club on July 10.

The roughs came away with placements 21 times compared to 5 for the smooths. The following judges honored the breed with Group 1 awards: Lesley Hiltz (Beagles), Dana Cline (Great Danes), Charles Trotter, Eric Liebes, Joan Liebes and Fred Bassett (Pomeranians).

The largest Herding Group, in which a collie placed, had a total entry of 189 for Judge Harry (Butch) Schulman, for whom a rough collie bitch was awarded a Group 2. This show was held at Gavelston County Kennel Club on July 24. This marks three months out of seven that judge Schulman had the largest entry of herding dogs where a collie placed in group.
