Tom Montero, Candidate for First Vice President

The Constitution defines the role of the First VP, as the person to take over in the event the President is unable to fulfill his/her duties. In my opinion, that means the responsibility of the First VP is to listen attentively to and communicate with the membership, be involved in the day-to-day operation of the Club, assume a leadership role, and be pro-active. One of my goals would be to promote the development of a committee operational guide. Such a guide would do much to alleviate and/or answer questions/concerns before they arise. As your lst VP it is my obligation to be informed of all concerns being addressed by the EC, the DDs and the General Membership. I believe it is important to lead by example, be prompt and truthful with decisions and responses, admit when you're wrong, let people know what you are thinking, and don't be afraid to ask for help.

My love of Collies began over 40 years ago with ”Cindy,” Tel's Lady Cinnamon, a dark mahogany sable and white rough bitch that Louis and Leila Wachtel, Tel Collies of New Orleans, retrieved from an owner that was unable to care for her. Leila's mentoring, kind heart, patience, and "school teacher" educational techniques edged me into making the Collie my breed of choice with “Cindy's” first litter. Later, when the “Reflection” puppy, “Blue,” that Leila allowed me to co-own, finished in '75 as BOB from the Rough Open Blue Dog class over 7 specials as Ch. Tel's Bold Blue Image of Thom, I was hooked.

Having been more active in the breed since 1988, my daughter and I have bred, shown, and finished both roughs and smooths under the kennel names of “Thom” and “LoriMar.” I have written for The Collie Review and my wife and I are 20 plus-year Family Members of the CCA, Family Members of the Greater Jacksonville Collie Club and the Collie Health Foundation. During the most recent years, I became very active with the duties of the two-term CCA Florida District Director during which time communication was instigated via a quarterly newsletter.

As a successful licensed architect, I have sharpened my skills as a communicator, manager and leader. These skills served me well as District Director, as the CCA Operations Manual Committee Chair and Ethics Committee Chair, and my work with an all-breed club in amending their constitution and bylaws. I now ask for your support and pledge to utilize these skills to facilitate the operation of the Collie Club of America for its members as its next First Vice President and, as such, to serve the Membership.
