July 10, 2010 Collie Health Foundation News The Collie Health Foundation is proud to announce the approval of an exciting new two-year grant at Clemson University for $119,978. Lead researcher, Dr. Leigh Ann Clark previously worked on CHF's DM project at Texas A & M University, and is credited with the identification of the merle gene. The project is titled, "Collie whole-genome sequence and genome-wide association studies" and its goals are to assemble full-genome, high-resolution sequence data using pooled DNA from genetically diverse Collies.
Completely
sequencing the Collie genome will allow for the identification of DNA sequence variations and other polymorphisms that make the breed unique. Increased knowledge of genetic markers informative in the Collie will provide a vital resource to expedite future research in the breed. Moreover, the inclusion of both dermatomyositis-affected and -clear Collies in the sequence analysis will facilitate an extensive investigation of candidate genes for this disorder. To identify genomic regions implicated in dermatomyositis, the proposal is to use the Affymetrix canine array to carry out a genome-wide association study. All data (e.g., sequence, genetic marker, etc.) generated in these studies will be deposited into a database created for the Collie Health Foundation.
The Foundation will be helping to coordinate subjects for inclusion in the first stages of this project. If you have a Collie that has been diagnosed with dermatomyositis, please contact grants chair Dr. Nancy Kelso for instructions to have your Collie contribute its DNA to this project. Her e-mail is collievet@msn.com.
In addition, CHF President, Nancy McDonald said that she is delighted to announce the unanimous election of the following 10 new Corporators: Ginny White, Mary Hunter, Jeanne Marre, Nancy Van Note, Laurie Jeff Greer, Dr. Babbi Dilbeck, Karen Anderson, Dr. Susan Floyd, Suzy DeLorenzo, and Tom Hoadley.
"CHF Corporators are expected to provide service to the Collie and the Foundation at an elevated level," said McDonald, "and we welcome these generous volunteers for volunteering their talent and skills to make our Collies' lives richer."
