Ring Patterns: A look back at April 2016

Hunterdon Hills Collie Club tops the list in April with best attendance
There were 14 specialty shows held in 6 states during April: Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington. Phyllis Autrey judged the largest talent pool, surveying 60 collies -- 45 roughs and 15 smooths -- at the Saturday morning show hosted by Hunterdon Hills Collie Club in New Jersey on April 9. This was the first show of the four-show specialty circuit held in Frenchtown, New Jersey. Judge Autrey was approved for Collies prior to 1980. Another specialty of note, Inland Empire's Friday show, achieved a rare balance with the same number of smooths and roughs -- 19 each -- for a grand total of 38 shown. That show was judged by Donna Buxton, who was approved to judge Collies in 1991 and whose initial breed is the St. Bernard. Typically, Inland Empire draws a 70 - 30 split between the varieties. And though the probability for a balanced entry is low, it did also happen in 2009, when Harriett Campbell had 17 of each variety.

Collies Rock in the Herding Group!
In the month of April, 29 judges awarded 29 Herding Group placements, including six Group 1 awards. The rough variety came away with a ribbon 18 times compared to 11 for the smooth variety. Pat Mowbray-Morgan, Leah Ryan, Joseph Gregory, Dr. Robert Smith, Patricia Trotter and Carl Liepmann honored the breed with those Group 1 awards. The largest herding group in April had a total entry of 204 for Robert Slay, where the rough collie was awarded a Group 2. This show was held on Sunday at the Blue and Gray Cluster, the day after the Central Penn Collie Club held their specialty in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in mid April.
