Ring Patterns: A look back at June 2016

Four shows complete the first half of the specialty season
There were four specialty shows held in two states during June: two independent specialty shows in Minnesota at the beginning of the month and two designated specialy shows with Virginia Kennel Club at the end of the month. Susan Christie judged the largest talent pool, surveying 34 collies -- the first of the two same-day specialty shows for Collie Club of Minnesota. Judge Christie was approved to judge the breed in April of 2009.

Rough Variety takes back-to-back Bests in Alaska!
During the last weekend of June, Judges Charles Olvis (Old English Sheepdogs) and Terry Stacy (Cocker Spaniels) awarded the Rough Collie back-to-back Best in Shows at the Alaska Kennel Club. The total competitors for these shows were 390 and 377, respectively.

This month there were 31 Herding Group placements, including those 2 Bests in Show, and seven Group 1 awards -- with all the top awards going to the Rough variety. The roughs came away with a placement 23 times compared to 8 for the Smooth variety. The following judges honored the breed with Group 1 awards; Honey Anne Glendinning (Canadian Judge), David Anthony (Cardigan Welsh Corgis), Pat Hastings (Poodles), Jacqueline Stacy (Pomeranians), Dr. Albert Bianchi (Shetland Sheepdogs), Elizabeth Muthard (Siberian Huskies) and Charles Olvis (Old English Sheepdogs).

The largest Herding Group in June, where a collie placed, had a total entry of 162 for Judge Thomas Coen, for whom a rough collie class bitch was awarded a Group 4. This show was held on Saturday at the Flatirons Kennel Club in Colorado on June 4.
