Ring Patterns - A month by month look back at the 2017 shows

Strong entries at East Coast designated specialties

May hosted a total of 15 specialty shows, 11 independent specialties and 4 designated specialties. Shows were held in 7 states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan and Utah.

The highest number of collies entered at a specialty show in May was at the designated specialty, Central Jersey Collie Club, for Judge Harry (Butch) Schulman with 85. Schulman also judged the largest entry, surveying 62 collies – 47 roughs and 15 smooths – at the Sunday morning show in New Jersey, hosted by the Trenton Kennel Club. Judge Schulman also awarded his rough Best of Variety winner a Group One and his Smooth Best of Variety winner a Group 2 in an entry of 195 herding dogs.

The Central Jersey Collie Club of Northern New Jersey specialty also pulled the largest number of rough collies for Judge Schulman with 47 and the largest turnout for the smooth variety was at the Indiana Collie Club Specialty in Indiana for Judge Marianne Sullivan with an entry of 22.

Collie Herding Group Placements flower in May
Collies placed in the Herding Group 47 times with two Best in Show awards under judges Joe Purkhiser, Col., USAF, ret., and Donovan Thompson. There were also nine Group 1 awards. Two Group 1s came from Harry "Butch" Schulman and one each from Judges Robert Smith, Norman Kenney, Lisa Graser, Lesley Hiltz, Col. Joe Purkhiser, June Penta and Donovan Thompson.

Six judges awarded both the rough and the smooth a placement in the same group – Harry "Butch" Schulman (at Trenton KC / hosted by Central Jersey CC), Lesley Hiltz, Donovan Thompson, Raymond Filburn, Jr., June Penta and Jacqueline Stacy. Judges Schulman, Hiltz and Thompson awarded the collie Group 1 and 2!

Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 31 times compared to 16 for the Smooth Variety.

The month's largest number of herding dogs shown – 243 – at a show in which a collie placed – was Grand Rapids Kennel Club (the host all-breed show for Midwest Collie Club) on May 27. In this case, the honor went to the Rough Variety. The judge was William Shelton, who judged the specialty on that date. Judge Shelton's initial breed is Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
